Need help fine-tuning my Radeon video card for IL-2
« on: December 31, 2011, 06:53:25 PM »
I built a new computer and my video card is a Radeon HD6950.  Unfortunately my in-game performance is quite sub-par.. weird graphical distortions and some stutters that should not be existing with a 2GB card.

Can some of you Radeon users help me fine-tune this?

Rivers are only partially rendered, and they have very jagged edges.

Coastlines are partially rendered and are very jagged.

Hi, try an older radeon driver, lower than 10.6.
You find them on the AMD Driver page under "previous dirvers"
For many IL2 players graphic problems similar to yours occur with the newer drivers (since 10.5) and Windows XP.

I am a fan of IL2 Sturmovik and have been playing it on HL for the last 8 months..Although my PC has a very low config. (Asus M2A-MX, Athlon X2 4200, 2GB DDR2 667MHz, CRT 17") I plan to buy a low end garphics card. I have heard that IL2 sturmovik is better designed to run on Nvidia cards is that a fact or a myth...?

Speaking for myself, i have a Radeon HD4670 1gb (not too expensive) and IL2 runs perfect and looks great, can't wish for more.

I've run both and I can say its a fact..you can't run water=4 on a ati. For some reason Nvidia runs open GL better IMO.

There will be a very good text about perfect settings here in a few days...
I am sure it will solve your problem too.

I think Catalyst 11.5 were last fine ATI drivers for Il-2, that's what I use my self with a HD5850 with no problems. May be later drivers also work, but since 11.5 works fine I didn't try. About latest drivers, I think I've read somewhere to somebody they screwed up Il-2 again, so 11.5 are fine I think.

About Nvidia or ATI, it's not a myth, but an Oleg preference (and Nvidia support and money I think...). When you write for an game you have to  use lots of routines, DLL's and so specific for a videocard model, you have to choose, and Oleg chose Nvidia because "he liked more" (also liked it's money for sure), he have say lots of times. Later any videocard will be able to run it, but probably not so perfect as videocard model you had in mind when writing. That's why benchmark tests are very tricky and biased , so a game optimized for a model will run perfect on it even against a more powered one from the other side... Anyway, ATI has fixed drivers for running on Il-2 since early days. Only there was a time, from 9.6 to 10.5 (if I remember) drivers, when an OpenGL bug were not fixed and it caused several problems on Il-2, but it wasn't Il-2 specific one but a problem with new OpenGL 3.0 version running older things. Now it's fixed since a lot of time, so it works pretty well. And for those Nvidia fans I have to say for a lot of time, probably much more time than ATI OpenGL bug, Nvidia had lots of problems with Il-2 and "black water", lots of glitches and various bugs even on early days and throughout lots of models (those with 7800 and 7900 remember?), I can say I had previously a 8800GTX and suffered lots of problems with Il-2. So, yes, Nvidia can set water=4 but, while it's nice, really =2 or =4 is not a great difference when flying. Nowadays Il-2 should not be your problem choosing a Nvidia or ATI card, choose what you can, what you like, or better priced one.

Water 1 & 2 are for ati cards, 3 & 4 are equivalent settings for Nvidia cards.

That is, 1 on ati= 3 on Nvidia, 2 on ati=4 on Nvidia

I am using Windows 7 x64 with an HD6970 no need to uninstall the latest driver.  Just put the atioglxx.dll from the cat 11.5 driver in your sturmovik root directory c://......IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. It works for me.

Hi there,

I have the same graphics card 6950 and problem as the poster. Isnt 11.12 the latest drivers for amd radeon 6950 and not the 11.5 mentioned. I have the 1.12 drivers and cannot update any further. I found the atioglxx.dll in the \driverstore\filerepository of my system 32 placed the file in my il-2 root but I still have the graphical problem. Some more help with this issue would be appreciated.

Did you decompress the file? Does it say .dll or .dl?

Hi, I face exactly the same problem described by 3./JG51_Heiden.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5600 Card with latest drivers.
By setting the Anti-Aliasing in CCC to "Game Settings", the rivers and the coasts are displayed correctly.
But then there is no Rendering working at all.
I found an earlier ati open gl driver in my system32, if i place this one into the game folder,
both problems, the water and the anti-aliasing are fixed.
But since this driver is from 2010, there is this "blue reflection" problem, which many ATI users had in 2010 and earlier.
Is there a solution or driver which fixes all three problems?

The .dll file is not compressed, even opening it with an editor and save it may cause problems.
Just search for the file at your windows system and replace it.
Try this, if it don't work post again, we find a way to solve this, but lets do it step by step.

thanks for the fast reply  :clapping:

What could be the name of the file I'm looking for, atioglxx.dll?
And should I find it here: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository?
By replace it you mean to replace it in the game folder?

I found a solution that works for me   :yahoo:
by using the old atioglxx.dll file from 2010 and setting both:

TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=0
and
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=0
from 1 to 0

This to get rid of the Blue Reflection.

But what is the effect of these two flags?
Do they cause any loss in quality by setting them to 0?
Thanks again

Hello, I have a Radeon 6950 with 2 GB with latest catalyst.

As romanscho posted, if you configure "use application settings" in Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic and Tessellation, CCC->Gaming->3D Application Settings, the game works fine, but you can get more FPS, (quality seems to be the same).

With the "atiglpxx.dll" file in the game folder, configure Anti-Aliasing "use application settings", Anisotropic 16x and Tessellation 64x, Catalyst AI High Quality and Enable Surface ..., Vertical Refresh Quality or Always On, AA Mode Super-sample AA and OpenGL Triple buffering, it seems to works perfect, without rare effects.
I don´t know which is the "blue reflection" problem

FRAPS shows 54 fps in pilot 1st person view with Eyefinity 5160x1080 resolution.

I don't know if this trick will work to every hardware.

I have W7 64.
I don't need the atioglxx.dll.

I'm with Catalyst 11.11 installed, the last one that I know it is working for IL-2, maybe newer versions will work too.
The only thing the I need to change is an entry in IL-2 conf.ini:
Code: [Select]
[GLPROVIDER]
GL=Opengl32.dll

[GLPROVIDERS]
Open GL=atio6axx.dll

This only works for 64bits SO, because the file is the OpenGL provider for 64bits systems.
It will not work if there is an atioglxx.dll inside the IL-2 folder.
