Weapons Addons After almost 1 year of intensive work, data collecting and 1000s of hours testing i present you the Weapons addon that will be included by default in next UP. No more unfair performance for specific guns and cannons. Every gun/cannon was trimmed not only regarding its actual performance but also in comparison with the rest guns/cannons in game.
After several months of testing we found that for some weapons, mainly small caliber guns and few of the cannons, there was the need to change their real life data so they could perform realistic and accordingly to the rest of the weapons.
Here is the methodology we used to achieve this:
A) if the performance of a weapons is lower or higher we tried to trim its penetration ability and explosive radius to achieve realistic performance. B) If the above method was not enough to achieve this then the next step was to alter its belting to achieve satisfactory results. C) If the above method was unsatisfactory then we tried to lower or increase the HE ammount of the bullet to achieve historical accuracy.
The characteristics that were not changed are the Rate Of Fire, the Bullets Weight and the Velocity.
Our data were mainly from the Flying Guns of WWII By Emanuel Gustin and Tony Williams, from Williams webpage here: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/ and from other reliable sources on the internet.
Now the testing methodology and our theory of the weapons damage in real life is this:
A) Theory of Weapons lethality in WWII:
Data taken from the Cartridge lethality table in Williams page: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/WW2guneffect.htm
Theory:
We know that historically it took in average 4bullets of a MG151/20 to down a fighter. The average Cartridge Damage of a MG151/20 bullet is 151,67. SInce for bullets a needed to down a fighter plane, we can assume that 606,68 is the average damage that a fighter can take before he is going down.
Which leads us to the following table:

The above conclusion/theory was made by Emil and it is the most correct approach we can have based on cartridge destructiveness in game as things like reliability of weapons are not taken into consideration by Game's engine. Althoug this theory looks very valid Gryphon, from the War Birds Of Prey admins made a very logical point: -------
I've re-read the nildram reference and think that the above is the best methodology we are going to get. To explain why IRL it took only 4 hits from a MG151/20 to down a fighter, consider this: if I was sitting in a fighter and it got hit by any cannon shells, I'd be out of that fighter so damn fast all you'd see is a blur! WW2 fighters were notorious for catching fire or suffering structural failure such that the gyroscopic forces would prevent the pilot getting out. In game, different story. Pilots stay on board until the controls dont work, its burning, or otherwise terminal. So in game we must expect more than 4 hits for a kill. I think that's even true for the AI we test against - having shot down hundreds of them in the past few weeks, the AI rarely bails out, so our kills will take more hits than those the Luftwaffe found. Make sense?
So what I suggest is we factor that in and raise our total cartridge power delivered to target from 606 to 1000 (for the Yak-7, other will vary).
-----
That would give us the following hits per kill:

(All tables data calculated by Emil)
For the ShKAS and a couple of other small caliber guns i've took their muzzle energy and i calculated their destructiveness accordingly sine they used a known belting. Data for few small caliber guns like the SvAKS taken from here:
http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/Historic%20MGs.htm
B) Testing:
We tested the required bullets to take down a fighter as following:
I chose the Yak-1 as fighter because its Damage Model is one of the most adequate in game, it doesn't get fire quick, it does not have any "bugs" in its Damage Model, and it is a light fighter as it should.
Then Emil made a simple Co-operation mission in Bessarabia map having 20 Empty-Transit Rookie Yak-1 as targets.
Our test-planes have unlimited ammo and we shoot them until one of the following conditions occured:
A) Caught fire and explode B) Lost controls and got into spiral dive or un-recovered dive C) Pilot killed D) Plane's wing or fuselage broke E) Pilot bailed out
When all the 20 planes got shot down, we exit the co-op mission and then we calculated the hit bullets with the ammount of the planes, 20 in this case. The number that comes out is the Average bullets number for each plane.
All the guns in game tested and trimmed by using this method. Here is an example of the co-op missions stats: (you have to start a Server and host a co-op being the only player).

The numbers below each report are the Average bullets number to bring a plane down with the tested weapon by dividing the total ammount of hit bullets with the number of the downed fighters (20).
Moreover 2 New types of cannons were created, the Type99-1 and Type99-2 for the Imperial Japanes navy fighters to replace the wrong Ho-5 that Il2 was using until now which was the cannon of the Army air force. As my friend Stratodog said: "Yamamoto would be furious about this"
This is the first time that Every gun/cannon is trimmed in game with relation not only the historical performance but the relativenes with the other weapons as well

* For the MG-17 the calculations did not take into consideration the fact that the Germans used a mix of Ball, Incendiary and Explosive bullets combined. Thus i have revised their Damage to around ~86 bullets per fighter.
And we must not forget that all the above could not be achieved without
Oleg Maddox, MG and 1C. Big thanks to them. Also a big thank you belongs to the Team Daidalos also that continues IL2 development.
